What is the Missing Middle in Housing?

5 Questions for Architect Daniel Parolek About 'Missing Middle Housing'

The missing middle response to urban housing demand

WE CAN talks a fair bit about "missing middle" housing-- options like townhomes, cottages, and other types that fall in between large apartment complexes and detached single family homes.  Like many cities, missing middle housing is both rare in Eugene, and difficult to build.  What is the missing middle and why is it so important as we confront affordable housing prices?  Articles from CNU and the AARP discuss.

Most people consider single-family homes as small-scale housing and apartment buildings as large scale. I’m saying that what’s in between those two extremes is “missing.” It’s missing because we haven’t built a lot of them in the last 60 to 70 years, partly because of zoning barriers.
