Register Guard warns against housing crunch

Housing crunch worse

Last week, the Register Guard posted an editorial, calling for more attention to the housing shortage in Eugene, which has a troubling affect on housing prices.  This is in light of the latest figures on home sales in Lane County, which show a very low inventory of houses. Policies and processes that make it difficult to build new homes need to be addressed-- and soon.

This situation didn’t develop overnight; there have long been warning signs that demand was going to outstrip supply. But the impact of the recent recession on the housing market pushed the issue to the back burner for several years. It now needs to be moved to the front burner, pronto — otherwise, this situation is only going to get worse.
